Reading Woodland Lead Rules by Area

A welcome and a lead rule answer different questions
Dog acceptance establishes recorded permission; it does not establish unrestricted off-lead access. Read the lead field alongside named areas, seasons and events. A woodland can have several arrangements within one destination, and a rule for a visitor area should not automatically become a rule for every trail.
The walk and woodland guide separates destinations from route records. Match your intended route or part of the site to the source that actually describes it.
Use named instructions
Look for the current managing body’s page and on-site instructions. Retain the area names in your plan rather than shortening a mixed policy to “off lead allowed” or “leads everywhere”. When the source does not establish the answer, unknown is more accurate than inventing a simple rule.
For general visitor context, consult the Countryside Code and, for relevant Scottish visits, the Scottish Outdoor Access Code dog-walking guidance. Keep those resources alongside current site-specific instructions rather than using a generic summary to replace them.
A worked site distinction
Westonbirt is a useful example of a destination with different arrangements in named areas. The Westonbirt guide shows how to consult the official source without turning one area’s permission into a whole-site promise. The directory keeps its general lead field qualified when rules vary.
A walk-route line likewise does not establish that every adjoining area has the same access policy. Geometry records where the source places a route; it is not an assessment of current surface, gradient or safety.
Before leaving
- Identify the particular route or named site area.
- Read current dog permission and lead conditions together.
- Check any seasonal or event restrictions.
- Confirm a suitable entrance and current visitor information.
- Keep a fallback if an essential access question is unanswered.
Use the day-out planner for separately checked food stops. Permission at the woodland does not establish a dog welcome in a nearby cafe.
